Why Is Ihram Important?

When millions of Muslims leave for the pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca, they must enter a special state of purity and sanctity, known as Ihram. All pilgrims are equal in the eyes of Allah whether they are Arabs or non-Arabs. Dressing alike is a symbol of justice between races, castes, or between rich and poor.

Ihram also has significance in the white cloak worn by pilgrims, similar to the shroud used to wrap the deceased before burial. Therefore, everyone dressed in the white sheets of Ihram is reminded of how death comes unannounced and does not discriminate between anyone. It encourages believers to improve themselves and avoid sins and bad deeds. The purpose of Ihram is to remind Muslims of their virtues and to help improve and increase their faith.
